Shipping from China to Europe: How to Choose Air, Truck or Sea

Start with the parcel, not a headline rate. Destination, contents, packed chargeable weight and deadline decide which Europe route can be quoted.

For most personal orders, air is the practical small-parcel option. Truck freight becomes relevant from 12 kg, while sea freight is intended for heavier shipments that can wait longer. The best route is the eligible one with the lowest complete payable cost that still meets the buyer’s deadline—not automatically the mode with the lowest price per kilogram. Quick route comparison

Route family Typical use Minimum shown in the current route table Reference transit window
EU air, general goods Small or time-sensitive ordinary parcels No fixed minimum stated 8–15 days
EU air, special goods Eligible food, cosmetics, liquids, internal-battery goods and other reviewed items No fixed minimum stated 8–15 days
EU air, volumetric divisor 12000 Light but bulky eligible parcels No fixed minimum stated; maximum 25 kg 8–15 days
EU truck, general or special goods Consolidated shipments from 12 kg 12 kg 25–35 days
EU sea Heavy, bulky or large consolidated loads 21 kg 45–60 days

These are operational reference windows, not delivery guarantees. Customs checks, flight or vessel schedules, weather, peak periods and last-mile conditions can change the result.

A current 15 kg comparison

The YANCHAO calculator was checked on 13 October 2026 with France selected, general goods, 15 kg actual weight and a 40 × 30 × 30 cm carton. It displayed these examples:

Route Delivery term Estimate Standard / displayed promotional price
Europe air, general goods DDP 8–15 days ¥1,303 / ¥1,172.70
Europe air, 12000 divisor DDP 8–15 days ¥1,455 / ¥1,309.50
Europe truck, general goods from 12 kg DDP 25–35 days ¥570 / ¥513
China–Europe sea, from 21 kg DDP 45–60 days Minimum ¥750 / ¥675 displayed; the example is below the stated minimum

The lower number is the promotion shown during the check and may change. Sea is included to show its minimum; a 15 kg parcel does not meet the displayed 21 kg threshold. Prices for another country, postcode, cargo type or carton may differ.

How to choose the route

  1. List the goods accurately. “Accessories” is not enough. Record the product name, material, quantity, value and whether it contains food, liquid, powder, a battery, medicine, a brand mark or a sharp part.
  2. Check import legality separately. A logistics route accepting an item does not mean the destination country allows its import. Food of animal origin, medicines, cosmetics and regulated products need country-level checks.
  3. Consolidate before comparing. Separate seller boxes can create avoidable volume. Wait for the intended orders, inspect them and approve one packing plan.
  4. Use chargeable weight. For a divisor of 6000, volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6000. The chargeable weight is normally the higher of actual and volumetric weight.
  5. Confirm the delivery term. Ask whether the booking is DDP or DDU and what the quoted price includes. Do not infer tax treatment from the route name alone.

What did YANCHAO’s Q3 2026 Europe sample show?

For Europe excluding the UK, 85 completed air parcels recorded a 14.3-day median from warehouse dispatch to customer or system confirmation. The quickest quarter was confirmed within 11.9 days; 55.3% were confirmed within 15 days and 75.3% within 20 days. The truck sample contained 22 parcels and recorded a 27.5-day median.

These figures describe a historical sample, not a guarantee. Customer or system confirmation can occur after the carrier’s delivery scan, and the truck sample is small. Country, postcode, cargo and route still matter. The Q3 2026 delivery-time report explains the method and limitations.

What do three Europe shipment cases show?

Destination Route and cargo Dispatch → confirmed receipt Final chargeable weight Paid example
Paris, France Europe air, 12000 divisor 13 Jul → 27 Jul 2026 16.240 kg ¥1,590; a separate ¥10 receipt benefit was recorded
Essen, Germany Europe air, 12000 divisor; five ordinary pastry mooncakes 28 Aug → 10 Sep 2026 3.140 kg ¥388 after a ¥50 new-user coupon
Aachen, Germany Europe truck, general cargo from 12 kg; portable air conditioner containing refrigerant 10 Jul → 8 Aug 2026 26.780 kg ¥1,185 after a ¥50 new-user coupon; value-added services included

All three records were booked as DDP door-to-door services. They are dated first-party examples, not reusable quotations. Acceptance of mooncakes or an appliance containing refrigerant on one reviewed route does not mean every recipe, appliance or destination is automatically accepted; send the ingredient list or technical specification for a new review.

What changed for low-value EU e-commerce imports in 2026?

From 1 July 2026, the EU applies a temporary €3 customs duty per tariff category to qualifying distance-sale consignments with an intrinsic value up to €150. It replaces the former customs-duty relief for this low-value segment and is planned to run until 1 July 2028. VAT remains a separate question; it may be collected through IOSS at checkout or handled through another permitted import arrangement.

This is why “under €150 means duty-free” is no longer a safe planning rule. The number of tariff categories, the sales and VAT arrangement, the declared value and the destination process all matter. See the updated China-to-Europe Customs Clearance Guide.

Which goods need a route check before purchase?

  • Food, especially meat, dairy or other animal-origin ingredients
  • Cosmetics, perfume, aerosols, liquids, pastes and powders
  • Medicines, supplements and medical goods
  • Electronics with built-in batteries
  • Power banks and loose batteries, which YANCHAO does not accept
  • Branded goods that may create intellectual-property questions
  • Knives, tools, magnets, fragile goods and oversized items

Send the exact product page or ingredient list for review. The final decision can depend on the route and destination, not only on the broad category.

How the forwarding process works

  1. Register and obtain the China warehouse address and user ID.
  2. Buy from Taobao, 1688 or another seller, or request purchasing support through YANCHAOBUY.
  3. Declare each domestic tracking number.
  4. Review warehouse photos, item count, weight and any visible damage.
  5. Resolve seller returns before the seller deadline.
  6. Consolidate compatible orders and select suitable protective packing.
  7. Compare eligible routes after final dimensions are available.
  8. Confirm the declaration, recipient details, delivery term and final charge.

Country guides

EU rules create a common framework, but local VAT administration, restricted goods and carrier delivery procedures still vary. These existing resources cover specific destinations and situations:

Frequently asked questions

Is air, truck or sea cheapest from China to Europe?

There is no universal cheapest mode. Air can be sensible for a small parcel, while truck and sea minimums can make them unsuitable. Compare the final payable amount for the same packed parcel and included services.

Does every EU route include customs duty and VAT?

No assumption should be made from the mode alone. Confirm whether the specific booking is DDP or DDU and what the quotation includes.

Can I ship food or cosmetics to every EU country?

Not automatically. Transport acceptance and legal import permission are different checks. Exact ingredients, packaging, quantity and destination must be reviewed.

Where can I get a current quotation?

Use the live shipping calculator with the destination and packed weight, then ask for item-level confirmation if the goods are sensitive.
