Air vs Truck Shipping from China to Italy: Which Route Fits?

Air is usually the first comparison for parcels below 12 kg; truck becomes relevant at the 12 kg minimum when the goods qualify and a 25–35 day plan is acceptable. Choose with final chargeable weight, not the seller's product weight.

Start with chargeable weight

Volumetric weight = length × width × height ÷ divisor

Suppose a parcel weighs 10 kg and measures 60 × 45 × 40 cm. At divisor 6000, volumetric weight is 18 kg, so 18 kg controls. That parcel meets the truck minimum even though its actual weight does not.

A reduced-volumetric air route at divisor 12000 would produce 9 kg, so actual weight of 10 kg controls. However, the reduced-divisor route has its own tariff, cargo rules and size limits. Compare complete quotes.

When air is the better starting point

Start with air when:

• chargeable weight is below the 12 kg truck minimum;
• delivery is time-sensitive;
• the goods fit an available air route;
• the carton is within air size limits;
• paying more for a shorter planning range is acceptable.

Air is not one product. General goods, special goods, 10 kg minimum and reduced-volumetric options have different prices and acceptance.

When truck is worth comparing

Compare truck when:

• chargeable weight is at least 12 kg;
• a 25–35 day planning range is acceptable;
• goods fit the general- or special-goods truck service;
• the Italian postcode is covered;
• DDP handling is wanted and its exclusions are understood.

Truck can be attractive for consolidated clothing, household goods or other eligible purchases, but the minimum means a smaller parcel can pay for unused weight.

Worked threshold examples

Example A: 6 kg chargeable weight

Truck bills at its 12 kg minimum, so standard air is normally the first comparison. Product eligibility can still force a special route.

Example B: 13 kg chargeable weight

The dated general truck tariff gives a planning line-haul calculation of CNY 494 at CNY 38/kg. The dated general air tariff, billed in 0.5 kg increments, calculates much higher. This does not include every possible charge and does not prove the truck route accepts the actual parcel.

Example C: bulky 10 kg carton

If divisor 6000 produces 18 kg, compare truck, standard air and the eligible 12000 air route. The parcel's deadline and goods can matter more than actual weight.

DDP and Italian import charges

The referenced truck routes use DDP. This assigns agreed import-clearance and charge responsibilities, but it does not prevent inspection or legalise restricted goods. Verify excluded fees and whether a new air quote uses DDP or another term.

Italy can apply VAT, customs duty and other charges to non-EU purchases. Since 1 July 2026, a temporary EUR 3 duty per tariff item type applies to qualifying e-commerce consignments valued at no more than EUR 150.
