What Can You Ship from China to Canada? Food, Cosmetics, Batteries and Restricted Items
Most clothes, books and ordinary household goods are straightforward to forward from China to Canada. The questions start when a parcel contains snacks, face cream, medicine, powder or a battery.
A forwarder may be able to carry an item that Canadian authorities will not admit. That distinction matters. Before you buy, you need two clear answers: will the route take it, and may it enter Canada? Loose batteries, power banks, alcohol-based perfume, fresh food, seeds and the other prohibited goods listed below should never be sent to the YANCHAO warehouse.
This guide uses YANCHAO service rules and Canadian government guidance checked on 18 September 2026.
Get two answers before you place the order
The first answer comes from the warehouse and carrier. They check whether the current route can handle the item. The second comes from Canadian import rules. CBSA, CFIA, Health Canada and Transport Canada each deal with different parts of that decision.
“Special goods” is a transport label. It is not customs approval.
| Gate | What is being checked? | Who controls the answer? | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Transport acceptance | Whether the warehouse and current route accept the item safely | YANCHAO, airline or vessel operator, and downstream carrier | Product link, exact name, brand, material, ingredients, battery details, liquid volume, quantity and photos |
| 2. Canadian admissibility | Whether the item may legally enter Canada and what documents, limits or charges apply | Canadian authorities, based on the exact product, origin, quantity, use and destination | Invoice, accurate declaration, ingredients or specification sheet, intended use and any required permit |
If either answer is vague, pause the purchase and ask for an item review. Once the seller has sent the goods, your options may narrow to a costly return or disposal.
Where common purchases usually fall
Use this table to decide what needs checking. It does not approve an individual product; the label, ingredients and current route still matter.
| Classification | Typical examples | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Usually general goods | Unbranded clothing, bedding, ordinary books, stationery, non-powered toys, kitchen utensils and household goods with no liquid, powder, magnet or battery | Confirm the item list, value, packed size and Canadian postal code, then compare routes |
| Needs review | Packaged food, creams, makeup, non-flammable liquids, powders, medicines, medical goods, branded clothing, blades, wood products and electronics with an installed battery | Send the product details to YANCHAO and check the relevant Canadian rule before buying |
| YANCHAO will not accept | Weapons, explosives, flammable or corrosive chemicals, compressed gas, loose batteries, power banks, outdoor power stations, tobacco and e-cigarettes, alcohol-based perfume, counterfeit goods, cash, precious metals, live animals or plants, seeds and fresh food | Do not order these items to the warehouse. Sea freight does not turn a prohibited item into an acceptable one |
Can you ship packaged food from China to Canada?
Sometimes, but “food” is too broad to answer with one yes or no. A sealed packet of biscuits and a sausage may sit in the same shopping cart, yet Canadian import rules treat them very differently.
Some packaged foods can travel on a suitable special-goods route. Canada still decides whether they may enter. The CFIA says its personal-use food rules also cover online purchases, and the answer depends on the ingredients, origin, quantity and destination province. Check the exact product in the CFIA's Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) before paying.
What to send for a food check
For biscuits, candy, tea, seasoning, instant noodles and other sealed food, send:
- the complete product name and shopping link;
- clear front, back and ingredient-label photos;
- net weight and number of units;
- whether the product contains meat, poultry, egg, dairy, honey, seeds or plant material;
- country of manufacture, not only the seller's location;
- confirmation that it is for personal use and not resale.
Without this information, nobody can give you a reliable answer. The CFIA may still require documents or refuse a product even when the amount looks reasonable for personal use.
Meat and animal ingredients are a harder case
Vacuum packing and factory sealing do not settle the import question. The CFIA says most personal-use animal products and by-products cannot enter by mail or courier unless AIRS lists a condition that allows them. Check anything containing meat, poultry, egg, milk or another animal ingredient. In many cases, the sensible choice is not to order it for forwarding from China.
Fresh food is prohibited under YANCHAO's current warehouse rules. If an online listing has no readable ingredients or origin label, treat that uncertainty as a reason not to ship it.
Can you ship skincare and makeup?
Many creams, lotions and makeup products can be checked for a special-goods route. The word “cosmetics” still tells us very little. Face cream, nail gel, an aerosol and perfume have different ingredients, containers and transport risks.
Send the ingredient list, product form, volume and packaging for each item. Health Canada keeps a Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist for prohibited and restricted substances. Its guidance also warns that some consumer products remain unlawful to import even when they are for personal use. A personal order faces fewer requirements than stock intended for sale, but it does not get a free pass from product-safety rules.
| Product example | YANCHAO transport position | Canadian check |
|---|---|---|
| Face cream, body lotion or lipstick | May fit a compatible special-goods route after review | Check ingredients, quantity and product claims; keep the original retail labels |
| Nail gel or liquid cosmetic | Review required because liquid or chemical composition matters | Check ingredients and restrictions; provide exact millilitres and packaging |
| Perfume containing alcohol | Prohibited under current YANCHAO rules | Do not send to the warehouse |
| Aerosol or pressurised spray | Compressed or flammable contents may rule it out | Get a product-specific safety and route answer before purchase |
| Product marketed to treat a disease | May be regulated as a health product rather than a cosmetic | Apply Health Canada's health-product rules, not cosmetic assumptions |
Do not declare a mixed order as “daily necessities” or a “skincare set.” List the products and quantities one by one.
What about phones, earbuds and other battery products?
The position of the battery changes the answer. A phone or pair of earbuds with the battery installed may fit a designated route after review. A loose battery, power bank or outdoor power station will not. YANCHAO prohibits all three.
Transport Canada regulates lithium batteries as dangerous goods because they can short-circuit, catch fire or leak. Battery chemistry, condition, configuration and watt-hour rating all count. One small battery can still need controlled packing and handling.
Before ordering an electronic product, provide:
- the exact device name and model;
- whether the battery is installed, packed with the device or separate;
- battery chemistry, watt-hours, voltage and capacity shown on the product or specification sheet;
- quantity and condition—new, used, damaged or recalled;
- product link and clear label photos.
If the seller cannot provide the specification, leave the item out of the order until you have a clear answer.
Can medicine or supplements go in the parcel?
Possibly, after two checks. YANCHAO must approve the item and route, and the product must meet Health Canada's rules. Health Canada generally treats a 90-day supply or one course of treatment, whichever is less, as a personal-use quantity. The product, recipient and label can still change the decision.
Keep medicine in its original retail packaging with readable directions. Send the exact product name, active ingredients, dosage form, strength and quantity for review. Labels such as “supplement,” “herbal product” or “medicine” are too vague.
Prescription drugs, controlled substances and products sold with therapeutic claims need extra care. YANCHAO does not accept narcotic or psychotropic drugs. If the packaging has no clear ingredient list or directions, wait for a written answer before ordering.
A few awkward categories
Wood, plants, powders and blades often look ordinary in a shopping listing. Their material or intended use can move them into a regulated category.
- Seeds, live plants and fresh plant material: prohibited by YANCHAO. CFIA rules can also require permits, phytosanitary documents or other compliance steps. Do not send them to the warehouse.
- Finished wooden goods: a finished item may fit a compatible route, while raw, untreated or bark-bearing wood can trigger plant-health controls. Provide the material and finish.
- Powders: some clearly identified consumer powders may be reviewable, but unidentified white powder is prohibited. Supply ingredients, use, colour, packaging and net weight.
- Blades and tools: an ordinary tool may be reviewable. Weapons and prohibited devices are not. Provide dimensions, purpose and photographs.
- Magnets: do not treat them as ordinary goods. Magnetic strength and route rules matter, and YANCHAO's general prohibited list includes magnets.
The details we need before you buy
Send these details for each product in a mixed parcel. It only takes one unlisted bottle, packet or battery item to hold up the whole box.
| Field | Example of a useful answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact product name | “50 ml facial moisturiser” | Tells the reviewer what the item actually is |
| Product link and photos | Seller URL plus front/back label images | Allows packaging and claims to be reviewed |
| Brand and model | Full brand and model number | Helps check specifications, recalls and brand restrictions |
| Material or ingredients | Full ingredient or material list | Essential for food, cosmetics, powders and health products |
| Battery information | Installed lithium-ion battery, 15 Wh | Separates installed batteries from prohibited loose batteries or power banks |
| Liquid or powder amount | 3 bottles × 50 ml | Quantity and container form can affect route eligibility |
| Quantity and intended use | 2 units, personal use, not resale | Separates a personal parcel from stock that may be treated as commercial |
| Product value | Accurate invoice value in CNY | Supports declaration, tax and claims evidence |
| Destination | Canadian postal code and province | Route and import conditions can be destination-specific |
Once the goods pass review, estimate the packed carton. Seller-page weights rarely include the final box and protective packing. Our air versus sea guide for Canada covers route choice, while the China to Canada shipping cost guide explains chargeable weight and current price references.
Five mistakes worth avoiding
Reading “supported” as customs approval
A special-goods route may have the equipment and carrier process to move an item safely. Canadian authorities still decide whether it enters the country. Keep the two answers separate.
Using one vague description for a mixed box
“Clothes and daily goods” is inaccurate when the box also contains sauce, nail gel or earbuds. List those items separately.
Moving a rejected item from air to sea
Sea freight does not make a prohibited product legal. Sea routes have their own cargo, minimum-weight, packing and destination rules too.
Calling a power bank an electronic accessory
A device with its battery installed may qualify for review. A power bank, loose battery or outdoor power station remains prohibited under YANCHAO's current rules.
Asking only after the parcel reaches the warehouse
When no route can take the item, a return or disposal may be the only practical option. Ask while the product is still in your shopping cart.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ship snacks from China to Canada?
Some sealed snacks can qualify after route and CFIA review. Check the ingredients, origin, quantity and Canadian destination in AIRS before buying. Snacks containing meat or other animal ingredients face tighter rules. A carrier's approval does not guarantee entry into Canada.
Can I ship skincare and makeup from China to Canada?
Some creams, lotions, lipstick and makeup can use a compatible special-goods route after review of the ingredients, form, volume and packaging. YANCHAO prohibits alcohol-based perfume. Aerosols and chemical products need their own safety check.
Can I ship a phone, earbuds or a power bank to Canada?
Some devices with a battery installed inside may be eligible on a designated route after battery details are checked. Power banks, loose batteries and outdoor power stations are prohibited by YANCHAO and must not be sent to the warehouse.
Can I ship Chinese medicine or supplements to Canada?
Get the product checked first. Provide its name, active ingredients, dosage, quantity, label and intended use. Health Canada's personal-use guidance commonly uses a maximum of a 90-day supply or one course of treatment. Controlled, prescription or non-compliant products can still be refused.
Does choosing a DDP route guarantee that a restricted item will clear customs?
No. DDP describes the route's stated duty and clearance arrangement; it does not override Canadian food, health, dangerous-goods, plant, consumer-product or criminal law. An inadmissible or inaccurately declared item can still be detained, returned, seized or destroyed.
Before the seller ships
Start with the product label, not the category name. Clothes, books and ordinary household goods are usually simple. Food, cosmetics, medicine, powders, liquids, wooden goods and installed-battery devices need a closer look. Get the route answer and the Canadian import answer while the item is still in your cart.
YANCHAO can receive, photograph, consolidate and repack eligible personal purchases, then match the parcel to a current route. It cannot turn a prohibited item into an admissible one, and it is not a substitute for a specialist commercial-import programme. The Canada forwarding company guide explains what to compare between providers. Current operational answers are in the YANCHAO Help Center.
