Confirm the UK delivery address before sending anything

A university name is not a complete delivery address. Ask the accommodation team:

• the exact building, room or resident-reference format;
• whether reception accepts parcels before the student's arrival;
• the earliest acceptance date;
• maximum parcel size or weight;
• whether photo ID is needed for collection;
• what happens during evenings, weekends or university closures;
• whether the courier must call the student rather than reception.

If reception cannot accept early freight, use a route and dispatch date that place delivery after check-in or arrange another authorised recipient.

Decide what travels with you and what travels separately

Carry documents, medication needed during travel, essential electronics and the first few days of clothing with you. Do not put an item into forwarded luggage only because it is inconvenient to carry.

For the forwarded shipment, separate goods into:

1. Essential soon after arrival: seasonal clothing, bedding and study materials that may justify air freight.
2. Non-urgent household items: spare clothing, textiles and ordinary home goods that may suit sea freight if the shipment meets the minimum.
3. Items needing approval: food, cosmetics, liquids, medicines, internal-battery products and sharp items.

How far ahead should a student plan?

Use a relative schedule rather than guessing a delivery date:

How should clothes and bedding be packed?

Textiles are often light but bulky. The warehouse may remove redundant seller cartons or compress suitable clothes and bedding, but the final carton still needs enough protection and must meet route limits.

At a 6000 divisor, a 52 × 42 × 42 cm carton has a volumetric weight of 15.288 kg. If the contents weigh 10 kg, the air quotation may still use 15.288 kg before rounding. Compression can help only when it safely reduces the final dimensions.

Do not mix a prohibited item into an otherwise ordinary clothes box; one item can make the entire route ineligible.

What does the Durham luggage case show?

A documented shipment to Durham left the China warehouse on 23 July 2026 and was confirmed delivered on 5 August 2026. Packing reduced actual weight from 14.850 kg to 14.340 kg, while chargeable weight fell only from 15.488 kg to 15.288 kg because volume remained the deciding factor.

Can students receive customs relief on personal belongings?

GOV.UK provides relief for eligible goods belonging to students coming to the UK for full-time study. The listed categories include clothing, items normally used for study and household effects. The goods must belong to the student and be intended for personal use, and evidence of the study period is required with the customs entry.

The official guidance says full-time students use customs procedure code 40 00 C06 rather than completing the standard ToR1 form for that study-period relief. This is not automatic simply because a parcel contains used clothes. Read Transfer of residence to the UK and give the required information to the carrier or customs agent before dispatch.

UK relief eligibility and carrier acceptance are separate. For example, the official relief guidance can cover a personal computer in some circumstances, while YANCHAO's current prohibited list does not accept computers or mobile-phone storage devices.
