How Much Does International Parcel Forwarding Cost?
There is no universal price per kilogram for international parcel forwarding. The final bill is based on the eligible route, chargeable weight, destination, cargo category, optional services and customs terms. Compare the payable total for the same packed parcel—not the advertised rate alone.

What is included in an international forwarding bill?
The international freight charge is only one layer of the total. Before comparing providers or routes, separate the bill into costs that always apply, costs that are optional and costs that arise only under certain conditions.
| Cost layer | What it can include | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery to the China warehouse | Domestic courier charge from each seller | Whether the seller or buyer pays it |
| International freight | Chargeable weight multiplied by the route's first-weight and additional-weight rules, or by a minimum-weight tariff | Route, billing unit, minimum weight and rounding rule |
| Warehouse and packing services | Consolidation, repacking, protective materials, compression or special handling | Which services are included and which require approval or payment |
| Route exceptions | Remote postcode, oversize, overweight or return handling | The exact postcode and finished carton size |
| Protection | Basic cover or optional declared-value insurance | Limit, evidence requirements, exclusions and claim process |
| Import-stage costs | Duty, tax, clearance or carrier handling when not included in the route | Whether the booking is DDP, DDU or another service arrangement, and exactly what the quote includes |
A low advertised rate can still produce a higher final bill if it uses a different volume divisor, rounds weight differently, starts at a higher minimum or excludes services included elsewhere. Compare the payable total for the same parcel, not two isolated continuation rates.
How is chargeable weight calculated?
For routes that use dimensional billing, chargeable weight is the greater of the parcel's actual weight and volumetric weight. YANCHAO's standard packing rule uses the following formula when a route has a divisor of 6000:
Volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6000
Some routes use a different divisor, including selected routes marked with a 12000 volume factor. The route shown at checkout controls; 6000 is not a universal rule for every service.
Consider a packed carton that measures 55 × 40 × 32 cm and weighs 7.2 kg on a scale.
| Route rule used for the example | Volumetric calculation | Volumetric weight | Chargeable-weight basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Divisor 6000 | 55 × 40 × 32 ÷ 6000 | 11.73 kg | Volume is higher than 7.2 kg |
| Divisor 12000 | 55 × 40 × 32 ÷ 12000 | 5.87 kg | Actual weight of 7.2 kg is higher |
This does not mean the 12000 route is automatically cheaper. It may have a different opening rate, minimum weight, cargo restriction, destination coverage or transit window. Apply the full tariff after determining which routes actually accept the goods.

Why is a home estimate different from the warehouse figure?
A home estimate often uses the product's net weight or a seller's carton. The final international parcel may combine several incoming boxes, remove redundant packaging, add protection and use a new outer carton. Those changes affect both actual weight and dimensions.
YANCHAO records an estimated amount before final packing. After consolidation, the warehouse weighs and measures the finished outbound parcel. Settlement then follows the supported refund-or-top-up process shown in the order: an overestimate can be returned through the available payment channel, while an underpayment must be completed before dispatch.
The final figure is therefore not confirmed when the first domestic parcel arrives. It is confirmed after the international parcel has been packed, measured, assigned to an eligible route and checked against the current tariff.
Can consolidation lower the shipping cost?
Consolidation can reduce duplicated outer cartons and make one international shipment easier to manage, but it does not guarantee a lower bill. The saving depends on whether packing changes the chargeable-weight tier and whether the chosen route suits the combined cargo.
Compression can help soft goods such as bedding or clothing. Removing empty retail space may help shoes, household products or multiple small orders. Fragile items may need extra protection, and retaining product packaging can matter for shape, warranty, resale or returns. Give item-level instructions before irreversible packaging is removed.
YANCHAO provides up to 180 days of free warehouse storage, giving shoppers time to wait for several eligible orders before deciding whether to consolidate them. Storage time alone does not make consolidation economical; compare the packed result and the route minimum.
Is shipping cost per kg a reliable comparison?
A per-kilogram rate is useful only when the route, cargo type, minimum weight, billing unit, volume divisor, tax treatment and destination are the same. Without those controls, the comparison can be misleading.
Use this quote checklist:
- Keep the destination country and postcode identical.
- Use the same cargo list, including batteries, liquids, food, cosmetics or branded goods.
- Use the same packed actual weight and carton dimensions.
- Confirm the same billing increment and rounding method.
- Confirm whether the quotation includes customs clearance and import taxes.
- Add optional packing, insurance and known remote or oversize charges.
- Record the quotation date because routes and prices can change.
Only then compare the final payable estimate. Country-specific examples are available in the USA shipping-cost guide, Canada shipping-cost guide and UK luggage shipping-cost guide.
Is sea freight always cheaper than air freight?
No. Sea freight often becomes attractive for heavier, less urgent shipments, but minimum weights and carton rules can make it unsuitable for a small parcel. Air may produce a lower payable total when a parcel is light, urgent or below a sea route's minimum. Sensitive goods can also require a different service from general goods.
Compare both modes using the same chargeable weight, destination and accepted cargo category. Do not select sea freight from the additional-kilogram rate alone. The next guide in this series explains sea-freight pricing and minimum weights in detail.
Does DDP mean there can never be another charge?
DDP describes the customs-and-tax responsibilities included in a specific booking, but it should not be treated as a promise that every event is covered. Confirm the service scope, declaration duties and route exclusions. Incorrect item information, an excluded postcode, oversize handling, a return or a service requested after booking can fall outside the original freight quote.
YANCHAO offers DDP on selected routes, not every service. Air EMS is DDU, and some other routes have their own customs terms. The booking page and current route conditions control.
How can you estimate the cost before sending purchases to the warehouse?
Collect the details that affect eligibility and chargeable weight before requesting a quote:
- destination country and full postcode;
- item names, quantities and cargo attributes;
- estimated total actual weight;
- realistic packed length, width and height;
- number of cartons if the order may be split;
- delivery deadline;
- any requested packing or insurance service.
Enter those details in the live shipping calculator. Treat the result as a planning estimate. When the goods arrive, review the warehouse photos and measurements, confirm packing instructions, then compare the routes available for the finished parcel.

Frequently asked questions
How much does international parcel forwarding cost per kilogram?
There is no universal price per kilogram. The applicable rate depends on the destination, cargo category, route, minimum weight, billing increment, volume divisor and current tariff. Calculate chargeable weight first, then apply the complete route price and any relevant exception or optional-service charge.
When is the final shipping price confirmed?
The final price is confirmed after the outbound parcel is packed, weighed and measured and an eligible route is selected under the current tariff. A pre-packing figure is an estimate. If the estimate differs from the packed result, the order follows the supported refund-or-top-up process before dispatch.
Why did a light parcel become expensive?
A light parcel can occupy enough space for volumetric weight to exceed scale weight. Retail boxes, loose packing and bulky soft goods are common causes. Repacking may help, but the saving appears only if the finished parcel moves to a lower chargeable-weight tier without compromising protection.
Does YANCHAO charge for warehouse storage?
YANCHAO's current service information provides up to 180 days of free warehouse storage. Other services, special handling and shipping charges follow their own terms. Check the order before approving packing or dispatch.
What information is needed for an accurate quote?
Provide the destination postcode, complete item list, cargo attributes, expected packed weight, carton dimensions and any optional service requirement. A quote based only on product weight can miss volumetric weight, route restrictions, minimums and postcode exceptions.
