How to Avoid Customs Surprises When Shipping from China to Europe

You cannot legally make genuine import tax disappear by writing a lower value or calling a purchase a gift. What you can do is prevent avoidable charges, document requests and delays by choosing the right sales, VAT and shipping arrangement before dispatch.

Five checks that reduce surprises

  1. Use the real transaction value. Keep the order and payment record. Deliberate undervaluation can lead to reassessment, penalties or seizure.
  2. Describe each item precisely. Material, purpose and product type help determine the tariff category and product controls.
  3. Check whether VAT was already collected. For qualifying distance sales up to €150, IOSS may collect VAT at checkout. Keep evidence, but do not assume this removes every customs charge.
  4. Confirm DDP or recipient-paid import charges. Ask what the quoted route includes in writing.
  5. Screen regulated goods before purchase. Food, cosmetics, medicines, batteries and branded goods can require extra evidence or may be unsuitable for the destination.

From 1 July 2026, qualifying EU distance-sale consignments up to €150 may be subject to a temporary €3 customs duty per tariff category. Splitting one honest order solely to stay below an old relief threshold is therefore not a reliable strategy.

Consolidate or split?

Consolidation can reduce duplicated packing and domestic-to-international handling. Splitting may still be necessary when goods need different routes or when one item makes the combined parcel ineligible. Make that choice for route compatibility, protection and genuine shipment needs, not to misstate value or contents.

Questions to ask before payment

  • Is VAT collected at checkout, through IOSS, or at import?
  • Is the route DDP or will the recipient pay on arrival?
  • Does the quote include customs brokerage or handling?
  • Which declared value and product descriptions will appear?
  • What evidence is required if customs asks for proof?
  • Are destination-country restrictions checked separately from carrier acceptance?

Read the EU customs clearance guide and landed cost guide before approving dispatch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I declare my parcel as a gift to avoid VAT?

Not when it is a commercial purchase. Gift relief has specific conditions and is not a label that can lawfully be applied to an online order.

Should I ask the forwarder to lower the declared value?

No. Use the real transaction information and keep proof of purchase.

Does DDP mean no customs risk?

No. DDP can make payment and clearance responsibility clearer, but it does not prevent inspections or product-control decisions.
