Shipping Taobao and JD Purchases to Australia: Customs and DAFF Guide
New goods bought from Taobao, JD and other Chinese marketplaces should travel with accurate item descriptions, quantities, values and supporting evidence. For a YANCHAO shipment, prepare the complete Australian address plus either an itemised packing list or clear product photos before route review. Food, cosmetics, plant material, wood and animal-derived ingredients need closer screening because carrier acceptance does not guarantee entry into Australia.
This guide covers newly purchased consumer goods. It does not treat those purchases as unaccompanied personal effects and does not use the B534 personal-effects process as a default.
What should you prepare before sending new purchases to Australia?
Prepare enough information for the warehouse, carrier and border authorities to identify each product without opening a guessing game.
| Information | What to provide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Australian delivery details | Recipient name, street address, suburb, state, postcode and reachable mobile number | The postcode affects route coverage and the address must match the shipment record |
| Packing list or product photos | One of these is required for YANCHAO's Australia shipment review | It allows the goods to be screened before international dispatch |
| Product description | Specific English name, material or ingredients, brand and intended use | Broad labels such as “daily goods” or “snacks” can hide a restricted ingredient |
| Quantity and value | Number of units and the genuine purchase price | Customs information should agree with the order and payment record |
| Order evidence | Keep Taobao or JD order pages, invoices and payment screenshots | They can support the declared description and value if questions arise |
| Special attributes | Liquid volume, powder, wood, animal ingredients, plant ingredients, batteries or magnets | These details affect route eligibility and Australian import conditions |
Photographs should show the product label, ingredient list and sealed retail packaging where relevant. A front-facing beauty photo is not enough for a sauce, cosmetic or supplement if the ingredients cannot be read.
What is the difference between ABF customs and DAFF biosecurity?
An Australian parcel can face two separate border checks. The Australian Border Force deals with customs declarations, values, prohibited or restricted imports, duties and taxes. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, or DAFF, assesses biosecurity risks such as food, plant material, animal products, wood, soil and contamination.
Passing one check does not replace the other. A product can be accurately valued for customs and still fail a biosecurity condition. It can also be acceptable from a biosecurity perspective but require another approval under a different Australian law.
DAFF advises overseas online shoppers to check import conditions before buying. Its officers may use X-ray screening, detector dogs and manual inspection, and a parcel can be selected even when the sender has not identified a risk item. The BICON database is the official place to check whether a product is permitted, requires documents or a permit, or must meet treatment conditions.
Which YANCHAO route fits new Taobao or JD purchases?
Route selection starts with the goods, packed weight, carton size, Australian postcode and deadline. It does not start with the cheapest headline rate.
Australia standard general-goods air
The Australia Air Freight General Goods Dedicated Line, Standard is the route to review for eligible new ordinary goods such as unbranded clothing and ordinary household products. General goods must not quietly contain liquids, powders, food, batteries, magnetism or another special attribute.
YANCHAO's current packing guide lists an Australia air carton limit of 21 kg actual weight, a longest side below 100 cm and volume below 0.24 m³. These are operational packing limits, not an Australian import approval. The active order page remains the final reference.
Australia sea line from 12 kg
The Australia Sea Freight Line from 12 kg is worth reviewing for heavier, non-urgent eligible purchases. YANCHAO's packing guide lists a maximum chargeable weight of 30 kg per carton, actual weight below 29 kg and no single side longer than 100 cm. Sea pricing and availability depend on the destination postcode, so the full Australian address is required before a useful quotation can be produced.
Reaching 12 kg does not make every product eligible for sea freight. The same declaration and biosecurity checks still apply.
Special-goods air
Cosmetics, packaged food, liquids and some other sensitive goods need an eligible special-goods route and item-by-item review. The North Perth case below used the Australia Special-Goods Air Line, Fast Delivery Guaranteed, not the standard general-goods line. One successful order does not place every cosmetic or food product into the same category.
How should common online purchases be declared?
| Purchase type | Useful declaration detail | Check before dispatch |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing and slippers | Garment or footwear type, material, quantity, brand and value | Confirm there is no soil, seed or plant contamination |
| Cosmetics and skincare | Product name, purpose, ingredients where available, volume and number of units | Confirm liquid, aerosol, alcohol and carrier restrictions |
| Packaged snacks | Exact product name, ingredients, manufacturing packaging and quantity | Check BICON for animal, dairy, egg, seed, nut or plant ingredients |
| Sauces and hotpot base | Product name, full ingredients, package type and whether shelf stable | DAFF conditions depend on the ingredients and how the product is processed and sealed |
| Dried seaweed or other plant food | Species or clear product identity, processing and sealed packaging | Plant products can have commodity-specific import conditions |
| Wood, bamboo or rattan goods | Material, finish and product use | Goods must be free from bark, insects and signs of damage; exact conditions belong in BICON |
| Cups, racks and metal accessories | Material, quantity, brand and value | Fragility and packing requirements are separate from customs eligibility |
Do not rename hotpot base as “seasoning,” skincare as “daily goods,” or a mixed box of food as “gifts.” Accuracy makes the parcel easier to assess and leaves a consistent trail across the packing list, product photos and order record.
What happens if DAFF inspects the parcel?
DAFF can release the goods, ask for treatment or supporting information, direct them for export, or require destruction when the import conditions are not met. The available outcome depends on the product and the official direction. Concealing goods or using misleading descriptions can lead to investigation and more serious consequences.
For YANCHAO Australia shipments, the customer service process supplied for this guide is:
- YANCHAO notifies the customer by SMS and an in-account message after receiving the inspection or clearance update.
- If DAFF or the clearance party asks for more evidence, the customer supplies the requested product or purchase documents within the stated deadline.
- Under YANCHAO's current operating policy for this workflow, the customer is not charged for destruction. Costs caused by additional document handling or return transportation are paid by the customer.
- If YANCHAO caused the issue, YANCHAO bears the applicable cost.
This is YANCHAO's stated customer-cost allocation, not a claim that Australian authorities never charge inspection, treatment, export or destruction costs. DAFF's public guidance says non-compliant goods may be treated, exported or destroyed, with some actions at the importer's expense. The shipment-specific official notice and the accepted YANCHAO service terms control the actual case.
Real shipment to North Perth: mixed new purchases cleared normally
This order is a first-party YANCHAO operational record for one completed parcel. It shows how detailed review and consolidation worked in a mixed-goods shipment; it does not guarantee the same clearance result for another formula, brand, quantity or route.
| Case detail | Record |
|---|---|
| Destination | North Perth, Western Australia |
| Route | Australia Special-Goods Air Line, Fast Delivery Guaranteed |
| Warehouse dispatch | 2 September 2026 at 10:12:58 |
| Confirmed receipt | 12 September 2026 at 00:03:27 |
| Recorded interval | About 9 days and 14 hours |
| Clearance result | Normal clearance |
The parcel contained cosmetics, two clothing items, slippers, baby wipes, a copper bracelet, barbecue seasoning, one box of snacks, one pack of hotpot base, a coat, a meal sauce, a tissue holder, a tea cup, Chinese speciality products, dried seaweed and two tea-storage cups.
What changed after consolidation?
| Measurement | Before packing | After packing | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Actual weight | 48.340 kg | 23.540 kg | -24.800 kg |
| Volumetric weight | 39.611 kg | 22.344 kg | -17.267 kg |
| Chargeable weight | 48.340 kg | 24.222 kg | -24.118 kg |
The recorded chargeable weight fell by 24.118 kg, or 49.9%. Much of the reduction came from removing separate domestic-delivery packaging and rebuilding the shipment for international transport.
The final chargeable weight in the order record was 24.222 kg, which is slightly higher than both the listed actual and volumetric weights. It should therefore be read as the route's final billing record, not reconstructed from the two headline measurements alone. Route-specific rounding, carton allocation or carrier adjustments can affect the payable figure.
The most important result is narrower: this declared mix cleared normally in this specific September 2026 shipment. It does not prove that all hotpot bases, sauces, seaweed products or cosmetics are admissible. Ingredients, processing, packaging, quantity and the current BICON conditions still decide the next parcel.
A practical checkout-to-dispatch workflow
- Screen before purchase. Check BICON before paying for food, plant or animal products. Ask YANCHAO to review liquids, powders, cosmetics, wood, batteries and other sensitive attributes.
- Keep the evidence. Save the Taobao or JD order page, payment record, product label and ingredient photos.
- Send to the China warehouse. Use the account-specific warehouse address and identifier so each domestic parcel reaches the correct account.
- Review the warehouse photos. Compare the received product and quantity with the order. Report a seller error before consolidation.
- Build the packing list. Use specific English descriptions, quantities and genuine values. Add materials or ingredients where they affect clearance.
- Choose from eligible routes. Compare standard general-goods air, 12 kg sea freight and a special-goods line only after the cargo classification and Australian postcode are known.
- Approve final packing. Check actual weight, volumetric weight, chargeable weight, carton dimensions and the selected route again.
- Watch both notification channels. Keep the Australian mobile number active and check YANCHAO account messages in case DAFF or the clearance party requests action.
Mistakes that create avoidable clearance trouble
- Buying restricted food first and checking BICON after it reaches the warehouse.
- Declaring a mixed carton as “household goods” without item-level detail.
- Assuming factory-sealed food is automatically allowed into Australia.
- Sending a cosmetic without showing its type, volume or ingredients.
- Treating warehouse acceptance as proof of destination-country admissibility.
- Choosing the general-goods route before disclosing liquid, food, powder, wood or battery attributes.
- Losing order and payment records before the parcel reaches Australia.
- Ignoring an SMS or account message while a document deadline is running.
Final checklist before international dispatch

Use the live shipping calculator only after the destination and goods details are ready. For a broader clearance overview, read China to Australia Customs Clearance. If the shipment contains used household belongings rather than new purchases, use the separate Australia sea-freight luggage customs checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Do new Taobao or JD purchases need a B534 form?
B534 is associated with unaccompanied personal effects. New retail purchases should not be labelled as old personal belongings merely to fit that process. The correct declaration and clearance method depends on how the shipment enters Australia, its value, goods and carrier arrangement.
What documents does YANCHAO need for an Australia shipment?
For the routes covered here, provide the full Australian delivery address plus an itemised packing list or clear photos of the goods. Keep order pages, invoices, payment records, labels and ingredient photos available in case the route reviewer or border authority requests them.
Can packaged food from Taobao be shipped to Australia?
Some commercially prepared foods may meet Australian import conditions, while others are restricted or prohibited. The answer depends on ingredients, processing, packaging and quantity. Check the exact product in BICON before purchase and disclose it for special-route review.
Can cosmetics from JD be shipped to Australia?
Some cosmetics can use an eligible special-goods route, but “cosmetics” is not one uniform category. Provide the product type, ingredients, volume, quantity and packaging. Aerosols, alcohol-containing products and other hazardous attributes may face additional carrier restrictions.
How will I know if DAFF inspects my parcel?
For a YANCHAO Australia shipment, YANCHAO sends an SMS and an in-account message when it receives an inspection-related update. Keep the recipient mobile number correct and monitor both channels until the parcel clears and reaches final delivery.
Who pays if the parcel is destroyed, needs more documents or is returned?
Under the YANCHAO workflow supplied for this guide, destruction does not create a customer charge. The customer pays costs arising from supplemental documents or return transportation. If YANCHAO caused the issue, YANCHAO bears the applicable cost. Official directions and the accepted shipment terms remain controlling.
