China-to-Europe Parcel Insurance: Is CNY 500 Enough for Valuable Items?
For an eligible parcel worth no more than CNY 500, YANCHAO's basic total-loss cover may be enough for an ordinary or coupon member. It is not enough for goods worth more than CNY 500, and basic cover does not cover damage. For higher-value eligible goods, choose declared-value cover close to the value you can prove with a recent invoice or shopping order. The current declared-value limit is CNY 10,000.
This is a first-party YANCHAO guide for students and personal shoppers consolidating Taobao, JD, 1688 or other China purchases for Europe. It explains the rules reviewed on 22 October 2026. The cover shown in the order flow and the selected route's terms control an individual shipment.
The short decision rule
Use the value you can document, not the price you hope to recover.
| Your parcel | Practical choice | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible goods worth CNY 500 or less | Basic cover may be sufficient for an eligible total loss | Damage is outside basic cover; membership and exclusions still matter |
| Eligible goods worth more than CNY 500 | Buy declared-value cover close to the proven purchase value | Payment cannot exceed the lower of the insured amount and proven value |
| Goods worth more than CNY 10,000 | Do not assume one parcel can be fully covered | The current declared-value ceiling is CNY 10,000; ask support before dispatch |
| Fragile, prohibited, perishable, used or otherwise excluded goods | Confirm eligibility before paying for cover | Buying cover does not make an excluded item eligible |
The important distinction is easy to miss. Basic cover, declared-value cover and compensation without declared-value cover are three different things. They should not be described as one universal CNY 500 promise.
How YANCHAO's basic cover works
Eligible consolidated shipments receive basic protection without an extra premium. Under the current detailed policy, an ordinary or coupon member's completely lost parcel can receive a freight refund plus compensation up to CNY 500. Higher membership tiers have different limits. Partial loss also has item-level limits.
Basic cover does not cover damage. It also does not remove the exclusions for a wrong address, refusal, theft after a recorded delivery, fragile-item damage or prohibited cargo.
The public YANCHAO insurance and claims FAQ gives the customer-facing summary. The order page and route terms remain the final reference for a specific parcel.
How much does declared-value cover cost?
YANCHAO's current declared-value premium is charged as a percentage of the amount selected at packing. The maximum selectable amount is CNY 10,000.
| Insured amount | Rate | Premium example |
|---|---|---|
| CNY 500–1,000 | 2% | CNY 500 cover costs CNY 10; CNY 1,000 costs CNY 20 |
| CNY 1,001–2,500 | 3% | CNY 2,000 cover costs CNY 60 |
| CNY 2,501–5,000 | 4% | CNY 5,000 cover costs CNY 200 |
| CNY 5,001–10,000 | 5% | CNY 8,000 cover costs CNY 400 |
The formula is straightforward:
Premium = selected insured amount × the rate for that band
Insuring above the supported purchase value does not increase the payout. If an order record proves a value of CNY 2,000, selecting CNY 5,000 does not turn it into a CNY 5,000 claim.
What proof must be provided?
Select the insured amount when submitting the parcel for packing, then give customer service acceptable value evidence before dispatch. Current policy requires either a formal domestic invoice or an order from a mainstream e-commerce platform purchased within the previous three months.
Entering an amount without supplying the evidence is treated as giving up declared-value cover. Save the following before the seller's order page becomes difficult to retrieve:
- the order page showing the product, quantity and paid amount;
- the payment record or invoice;
- warehouse inspection photos and the final packing record;
- tracking screenshots;
- photos of the outer carton, inner packing and damaged goods if a damage claim is needed.
The claims form and after-sales contact asks for the shipment or order number and a description of the issue. YANCHAO begins handling a complete claim promptly, but a review start time is not a guaranteed payment time.
Loss and damage do not pay the same way
For an eligible loss under declared-value cover, YANCHAO refunds freight where the policy says a freight refund applies, then pays the lower of the selected insured amount and the proven actual value. A parcel that is lost after overseas extraction may be handled differently and may not qualify for a freight refund.
For eligible damage under paid declared-value cover, compensation is based on the assessed value of the damaged item, capped by the insured amount. A freight refund is not automatic for damage. Basic cover does not cover damage at all.
| Event | Goods compensation | Freight treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible total loss before overseas extraction, with declared-value cover | Lower of insured amount and proven actual value | Freight may be refunded under the applicable loss rule |
| Eligible loss after overseas extraction | Lower of insured amount and proven actual value | Freight is not refunded under the current detailed policy |
| Eligible damage with paid declared-value cover | Assessed damaged-item value, capped by insured amount | Do not assume freight will be refunded |
| No declared-value cover, eligible loss | Air: CNY 40/kg; sea: CNY 20/kg; maximum CNY 1,200 per shipment | Depends on whether loss occurred before or after overseas extraction |
A tracking pause is not proof of loss by itself. Carrier investigation, customs status and the route's loss standard must be checked first. The wider lost and damaged parcel risk guide explains what evidence to keep at delivery.
A CNY 2,000 clothing parcel: what changes with the cover amount?
Consider a 3 kg clothing parcel worth CNY 2,000. The CNY 343 freight below uses the historical route inputs supplied for this example: CNY 143 for the first 0.5 kg and five additional 0.5 kg units at CNY 40 each. It is an illustration, not a live quote. Check the YANCHAO shipping calculator for current routes and prices.
| Scenario | Illustrative outcome | Uncovered goods value |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible total loss with CNY 500 cover | CNY 343 freight refund + up to CNY 500 for goods | CNY 1,500 |
| Eligible total loss with CNY 2,000 cover | CNY 343 freight refund + up to CNY 2,000 for goods | CNY 0; premium is CNY 60 |
| Damage assessed at CNY 800, basic cover only | Damage is outside basic cover | CNY 800 |
| Eligible damage assessed at CNY 800, with CNY 2,000 cover | Up to CNY 800 for the damaged goods | CNY 0 for the assessed goods loss; freight treatment is separate |
This example assumes that the parcel, goods, evidence and cause all qualify. It is not a pre-approval of any claim.
Two real European claim cases
These records show why the event type matters. They are individual YANCHAO cases, not a predicted claim result for every parcel.
Sweden air parcel: treated as lost
The carrier first reported that the parcel was under inspection and awaiting release. Tracking then stopped and the parcel was not extracted. The customer had paid CNY 10 for CNY 500 of declared-value cover. The case was handled as a loss: CNY 846.60 freight plus CNY 500 goods compensation, for CNY 1,346.60 in total.
The numbers follow the eligible-loss rule: freight was returned, while goods compensation stopped at the selected insured amount.
United Kingdom air parcel: treated as damaged
An incomplete address caused delivery failure. After a new address was submitted, the last-mile carrier later reported that the returned parcel was damaged and would not accept it for redelivery. The customer had CNY 500 of declared-value cover. The goods compensation was CNY 500. The original freight was not refunded because this was handled as damage rather than total loss.
That difference is why a page promising “full freight refund for every loss or damage” would be inaccurate.
Which goods may be excluded from declared-value cover?
Transport acceptance and insurance eligibility are separate checks. An item can be accepted only on a specialist route yet remain subject to an insurance exclusion. Prohibited goods cannot be made eligible by buying cover.
The current exclusion list includes categories such as:
- cash, negotiable instruments, securities, identity documents and passports;
- art, precious metals, jewellery, antiques and high-value watches;
- live animals or plants, fresh or cold-chain goods and other perishables;
- dangerous goods, flammables, weapons, ammunition and complete vehicles;
- medicines, serum, vaccines and blood products;
- unsupported precision equipment;
- logs, ores and certain bulk raw materials;
- gifts, compensation or aid goods without a supported purchase value;
- returned, repair, in-use, old or second-hand goods;
- loose or inadequately packed cargo and fragile goods where damage is excluded.
This is a summary, not an underwriting approval. Ask support to confirm the exact item and route before dispatch. YANCHAO's cargo rules also prohibit items such as power banks, outdoor power stations, alcohol-based perfume, fresh food, counterfeit goods, loose batteries and flammable materials.
How do other forwarding services handle cover?
Policies vary by carrier and route, so a headline insurance limit is not enough for comparison.
Fuuffy's published claim guide says its basic and add-on compensation differs by carrier. It lists separate caps and conditions for UPS, FedEx, EconomiQ and Veelo, and notes that some channels do not compensate damage. It also says claims commonly need to be filed within 7–14 days.
DK Help Center's return, loss and damage policy likewise bases reimbursement on proof and carrier limits, with exclusions for cases such as an incorrect address. These examples are included to show why shoppers should compare the trigger, evidence, exclusions and freight treatment, not to rank services that operate different routes.
A five-minute check before you pay
- Add up the value of the goods that will be inside the final consolidated parcel.
- Remove any item that is prohibited or cannot be covered.
- Check the selected route's current protection terms.
- Choose an insured amount close to the value shown by recent invoices or platform orders.
- Send the evidence before dispatch and keep copies until delivery is complete.
- At delivery, inspect the carton, photograph any visible damage and retain all packaging.
For Europe route selection, compare air, truck and sea only after final packed weight, dimensions and cargo type are known. The China-to-Europe air, truck and sea guide explains the route thresholds and reference windows.
Frequently asked questions
Is YANCHAO's free CNY 500 cover enough for a laptop or other valuable item?
Usually not if the provable value is above CNY 500, and the item must first be eligible for both transport and cover. Basic protection also does not cover damage. Confirm the cargo category and choose declared-value cover close to the supported purchase value before dispatch.
Can I insure a CNY 2,000 item for CNY 5,000?
You can only recover the lower of the insured amount and the proven actual value. Paying for CNY 5,000 of cover does not turn a CNY 2,000 purchase into a CNY 5,000 payout.
Does a damage claim include a full freight refund?
No universal freight refund applies to damage. Under current paid-cover terms, eligible damage is assessed against the damaged item's value and capped by the insured amount. Freight treatment depends on the event and applicable policy; basic cover does not cover damage.
What happens if I do not buy declared-value cover?
For an eligible uninsured loss, the current weight-based standard is CNY 40/kg for air and CNY 20/kg for sea, capped at CNY 1,200 per shipment. Freight treatment depends on whether the parcel was lost before or after overseas extraction and on the cause.
When should I contact YANCHAO about a possible claim?
Contact support as soon as loss, shortage or damage is discovered. Keep the parcel, packaging, photos, tracking record, invoice or platform order and payment proof. A tracking delay alone does not establish loss, so YANCHAO may first ask the carrier to investigate.
