Student Shipping Cost from China to Australia: Air, Sea & Chargeable Weight

YANCHAO’s Australia route table reviewed on 26 August 2026 starts at ¥89 for the first 0.5 kg by general-goods air and ¥204 for the first 12 kg by sea to postcodes 2000–4999. Final cost also depends on packed size, cargo type and postcode.

Price-snapshot notice: The figures below preserve the operational data used in YANCHAO’s original Australia cost articles. They are dated reference charges, not a permanent price promise. Use the live calculator for current route availability; the warehouse’s final outbound measurement controls the payable charge.

Route Reference charge Route transit estimate Pricing condition
Fast air ¥98 first 0.5 kg + ¥42 per additional 0.5 kg 6–9 days Eligible cargo; current capacity must be checked
General-goods air ¥89 first 0.5 kg + ¥37 per additional 0.5 kg 7–12 days General goods; packed carton limits apply
Special-cargo air, standard ¥93 first 0.5 kg + ¥40 per additional 0.5 kg 7–12 days Only eligible sensitive goods on the confirmed route
Air EMS ¥180 first 0.5 kg + ¥55 per additional 0.5 kg 10–20 days DDU: destination duties and taxes are not included
Sea, postcodes 2000–4999 ¥204 first 12 kg + ¥17/kg thereafter 30–45 days 12 kg minimum; postcode and carton rules apply
Sea, postcodes 5000–7999 ¥276 first 12 kg + ¥23/kg thereafter 30–45 days 12 kg minimum; postcode and carton rules apply

The air rates are charged in 0.5 kg steps, while the two sea rates begin at 12 kg and then add whole kilograms under the applicable route rules. The transit figures describe the named transport service, not the entire seller-to-door journey. Seller dispatch, warehouse intake, consolidation, customs or biosecurity inspection and final-mile delivery require separate time allowances.

Worked price examples

These examples apply the dated table directly and exclude any promotion, optional service or adjustment that is not shown in the base tariff.

1 kg by general-goods air

  • first 0.5 kg: ¥89;
  • one additional 0.5 kg: ¥37;
  • reference route charge: ¥126.

1 kg by fast air

  • first 0.5 kg: ¥98;
  • one additional 0.5 kg: ¥42;
  • reference route charge: ¥140.

15 kg by sea to postcode 2000–4999

  • first 12 kg: ¥204;
  • remaining 3 kg: 3 × ¥17 = ¥51;
  • reference route charge: ¥255.

15 kg by sea to postcode 5000–7999

  • first 12 kg: ¥276;
  • remaining 3 kg: 3 × ¥23 = ¥69;
  • reference route charge: ¥345.

These are arithmetic examples, not checkout quotations. A quote can change after final packing, measurement, cargo review, postcode validation or route selection.

What does “shipping cost per kg” actually mean?

A per-kilogram figure is only comparable after the route minimum and chargeable weight are applied. Air uses a higher first 0.5 kg charge, so its effective cost per kilogram normally falls as chargeable weight increases. The listed sea routes start at 12 kg, so quoting their continuation rate for a smaller parcel would be misleading.

Route 1 kg base-tariff calculation 5 kg base-tariff calculation Minimum or comparison rule
General-goods air ¥126 total / ¥126.00 per kg ¥422 total / ¥84.40 per kg First 0.5 kg + nine additional 0.5 kg steps at 5 kg
Fast air ¥140 total / ¥140.00 per kg ¥476 total / ¥95.20 per kg Current capacity and cargo eligibility must be checked
Special-cargo air, standard ¥133 total / ¥133.00 per kg ¥453 total / ¥90.60 per kg Only for goods accepted by the confirmed sensitive-goods route
Air EMS ¥235 total / ¥235.00 per kg ¥675 total / ¥135.00 per kg DDU; destination duties and taxes are not included
Sea, postcodes 2000–4999 Not comparable below the 12 kg minimum Not comparable below the 12 kg minimum ¥204 at 12 kg = ¥17.00 per kg; ¥255 at 15 kg = ¥17.00 per kg
Sea, postcodes 5000–7999 Not comparable below the 12 kg minimum Not comparable below the 12 kg minimum ¥276 at 12 kg = ¥23.00 per kg; ¥345 at 15 kg = ¥23.00 per kg

The table uses the base tariff reviewed on 26 August 2026 and does not apply the promotional “reference received price” entries found in the route file. It also excludes optional services and live adjustments. Always compare the total payable amount for the same final carton rather than multiplying a continuation rate by scale weight.

Calculate chargeable weight before comparing prices

Most listed Australia routes compare actual weight with volumetric weight and charge the larger result. The standard reference formula is:

Length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 6000 = volumetric weight (kg)

A finished carton measuring 52 × 42 × 42 cm has a volumetric weight of 15.288 kg. If it weighs 10 kg on a scale, the quote may be based on 15.288 kg before the selected route’s rounding rules are applied. If it weighs 18 kg, the actual weight is higher and may become the chargeable weight.

Do not compare providers using a headline price per kilogram alone. Use the same packed dimensions, divisor, minimum weight, rounding rule, postcode, customs term and delivery scope. Removing surplus seller packaging, consolidating compatible purchases and compressing suitable soft goods can reduce carton volume, but the finished package must still protect its contents.

Why the postcode changes the sea-freight price

YANCHAO’s Australia sea table separates postcodes 2000–4999 from 5000–7999. The second zone has a higher 12 kg starting charge and a higher continuation rate. A sea quote without the complete Australian postcode is therefore incomplete.

The receiver should also confirm that the delivery address can accept a large carton. University residences, apartment buildings and collection points may have their own access or reception rules. The live route may impose additional delivery-area conditions even when a postcode is within a listed range.

Carton limits to check before packing

The reviewed packing rules list the following Australia carton limits:

  • Air: 0–21 kg actual weight, longest side under 100 cm and volume under 0.24 m³.
  • Sea: no more than 30 kg chargeable weight, 0–29 kg actual weight and no side longer than 100 cm.

These limits are route-screening references, not permission to ship every item that physically fits. Food, cosmetics, liquids, powders, medicines, wood and battery products require item-level screening. Power banks, outdoor power stations and loose batteries are prohibited under YANCHAO’s warehouse policy. Acceptance by a route does not guarantee Australian customs or biosecurity clearance.

What can change the final student shipping quote?

The payable amount can differ from the reference calculation because of:

  • final outbound weight and dimensions after consolidation;
  • the route’s weight increment and rounding method;
  • general-goods or sensitive-goods classification;
  • destination postcode and delivery-area coverage;
  • DDP or DDU customs terms—Air EMS in this table is DDU;
  • carton size and per-carton weight limits;
  • current capacity, promotions and route availability;
  • optional protection, reinforcement or other requested services.

Prepare an itemised contents list, declared values, destination postcode, desired arrival window and estimated carton data before requesting a quote. Exact ingredients, materials or battery specifications may be needed for sensitive goods.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to ship 1 kg from China to Australia?

Using the route table reviewed on 26 August 2026, 1 kg calculates to ¥126 on general-goods air or ¥140 on fast air before any live-route adjustment. The payable quote still depends on volumetric weight, cargo eligibility and current availability.

Is sea freight cheaper than air for student luggage?

Sea can be more economical for qualifying non-urgent cartons from 12 kg, but the two listed postcode zones have different prices. Compare the same packed chargeable weight and delivery postcode rather than only comparing the advertised starting charge.

How is volumetric weight calculated?

The standard reference formula is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6000. The larger of actual and volumetric weight is normally used before route-specific rounding. The warehouse’s final packed measurements control the payable calculation.

Why do Australian postcodes have different sea-freight prices?

The reviewed sea table separates postcodes 2000–4999 and 5000–7999 into different rate zones. Transport and final-mile coverage differ by region, so the complete postcode is required for a comparable quote.

Are duties and taxes included in every Australia route?

No. The Air EMS entry in this table is DDU, meaning destination duties and taxes are not included. Other routes must be checked under their current live terms rather than assuming every service uses the same customs arrangement.
